Flaggfabrikken is pleased to welcome Matei Bejenaru, artist and context maker from Ia?i in north east Romania. He has a long standing commitment to his local setting, as artist, educator and initiator. In this Flaggfabrikken presentere: we will get to know more about a situation on the east side of Europe not to dissimilar from the situation here in Bergen.

“The presentation will analyze the post-communist cultural context of Ia?i, a university center in the north east of Romania, and how independent artistic initiatives have developed a local art scene and an institution connected to similar ones from East and South-East Europe.

I will give examples of the main initiatives organized by Vector Association, from the Periferic Biennial, now in its 8th edition, the Vector magazine – art and culture in context, Vector gallery and the educational programmes run in partnership with the Arts University of Ia?i.

Also, I will identify some art practices of artists from Ia?i, relevant to the local context, from social involvement to critique of the role of the religion in the public sphere.” -Matei Bejenaru
