Happy Aborted Children; a performance by Joanna Rytel

The works of Joanna Rytel (b.1974) aims to challenge our thoughts on love, sexuality, gender, porn and race from a feminist point of view. In Sweden, Rytel is known for attacking the Miss Sweden 2001 contest on live-TV, in a performance with banners aimed for the older male viewers proclaiming them as “old mans slime” (Gubbslem). It happened at a time when young feminists in Sweden had managed to get attention in the media and supported each other in opposing what they experienced as an outdated patriarch society.

Happy Aborted Children is a performance staked out as a birthday party for the children she chose not to give birth to. Rytel rejects the common sense of shame that is often present when admitting an abortion and aims to offer an alternative view to the dominating eyes of pro-life activists. Because it´s alright to choose.

After the performance there will be a live concert by the queer electro hiphop riot grrrl band Scream Club from Olympia, USA.
