Morten Torgersrud is hosting the third of B-open’s series of study
circles in 2010. Torgersrud has chosen ‘Towards a philosophy of
photography’ (1983) by Vilém Flusser.
In this text Vilém Flusser avoid to discuss photography in relation to
what photographs actually depict, but rather put emphasis on formal
and material aspects such as the fact that photographs can be
reproduced and distributed, or that they are created by certain
‘programmed’ machines. Flusser points to a critical / reflexive use of
the photograph, but at the same time he uses photography as a kind of
model to examine what he calls a post-industrial and post-historical
situation.
Morten Torgersud is a visual artist and photographer currently working
at Flaggfabrikken – center for photography and contemporary art.
